The Learning Gym Programs
Learning Disability Programs in Los Angeles

At The Learning Gym, we literally "Train The Brain." Neuroscience research has made important discoveries about the brain's ability to adapt and "wire" or "rewire" its processes to create new or more efficient methods of processing and handling information.

The Learning Gym Offers the Most Comprehensive Set of Programs Available

The Learning Gym programs capitalize on brain plasticity and exercise it to create or increase efficiency of processing by targeting visual motor/perceptual skills, sensory-motor skills, auditory/listening skills and cognitive abilities training. The Learning Gym's cross training approach improves brain functioning, attention, focus, academic performance, confidence, behavior and so much more.

For more information read Why The Learning Gym Works.

The Learning Gym utilizes the following specialized programs created specifically for various disabilities. Progress is tested and monitored to ensure success.

Core Learning Gym Training

Our signature Learning Gym training program applies an integrative, multi-pronged approach to improve attention, focus, academic performance, behavioral issues, processing disorders, coordination and most of all, self esteem.

A tailored program is created for your child that will specifically target their individual needs. Exercises target visual motor/perceptual skills, sensory-motor skills, listening skills and cognitive abilities. The Learning Gym's Sensory Motor program will work on balance, spatial awareness and integration of the body's sensory systems. The visual program trains eye muscle coordination that will allow for more efficiency in assimilating and processing visual information. Listening will be exercised by using the Fast ForWord program, an auditory-language training program that not only improves listening and phonemic awareness skills but also memory, attention, processing and sequencing.

Both one-on-one and group training is offered. There are never more than 3 children per trainer!

50 min session (recommended 2 x a week) $60 or discounted blocks of 10 sessions for $500.

Sensory Integration Through Brain Gym Exercises

Most children develop normal sensory integration through routine exploration of the world, but some need extra help. A child may have difficulty planning and organizing actions, carrying out skilled movements, learning new tasks and unfamiliar movements, or maintaining appropriate attention levels for learning and interacting. When sensory integration is disordered, problems in learning, development, or behavior may occur. Independent studies show that a sensory integrative dysfunction can be found in up to 70% of children who are considered learning disabled by schools.

Physical movement plays an important role in the creation of nerve cell networks which creates the pathways for learning. The Learning Gym and Brain Gym Training activates full mind/body function through simple integrative movements which focus on specific aspects of the sensory activation and facilitate integration of function across the body midline. Movements that cross the body's midline use both sides of the brain and help to build full sensory access (auditory, visual, proprioceptive). Since these specific movements are activating nerve networks throughout the brain, they help build the hardware needed to assure success for life-long learning.

50 min session (recommended 2 x a week) $60 or discounted blocks of 10 sessions for $500.

Fast ForWord®

Fast ForWord

The Fast ForWord programs provide intense auditory language training exercises that promote brain fitness. ForWord works in an integrated way to improve auditory processing skills, working memory, attention, reading and listening comprehension, syntax, and grammar. Such cognitive training will enable you or your child to accelerate acquisition of knowledge, better understand instruction and have an improved trajectory of learning success. Over 200 research studies confirm learners from pre-K to post secondary levels realize achievement and gains of one to two years in as little as 8-12 weeks and maintain an accelerated rate of learning even after the program ended!

Played on a computer for 2 hours a day for 6 weeks - $2000 (Can be done at home too!)

Enlisten®

Enlisten

Enlisten is an individualized sound listening training program delivered through comfortable, high quality headphones that improves how the ear processes sound and body movement and stimulates growth of new and underutilized neural pathways.

Listening is more than just hearing sounds. It is the active ability to discriminate between sounds, locate sounds in three-dimensional space, tune sounds in and out from our environment, sequence and organize sounds, and comprehend their meaning. Listening plays a fundamental role in processing all language information, and hence all information learned through language. The Enlisten program trains the human ear to acquire, develop, and refine one's listening ability.

The benefits of improved listening skills include: improved speech, language, and motor skills, better social skills, improved learning and academic skills, better concentration and organization of information, and accelerated learning of reading, among many others.

2 hours a day for 15 consecutive days, a 4 week break and repeated (at home) - $3000

Berard Auditory Integration Training (AIT)

AIT - Auditory Integration Training

It has been determined that distortions in hearing or auditory processing also often contributes to many behavioral or learning disorders such as: attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), autism, dyslexia, hyperactivity, learning disabilities (LD), language impairments, pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), central auditory processing disorder (CAPD), attention deficit disorder (ADD), and depression. AIT is a sound and music therapy system used to rehabilitate these disorders of the auditory system. It was designed to normalize hearing and the ways in which the brain processes auditory information.

Distortions in hearing can sometimes be a significant contributing factor in the conditions listed above. Individuals with the abovementioned disorders can often have hearing which is disorganized, erratic, asymmetrical, hypersensitive, or otherwise abnormal. During Berard Auditory Integration Training, music is sent through a specialized electronic device. The electronic device randomizes and filters the frequencies from the music source and sends these modified sounds into ears through a set of headphones. The randomized frequencies mobilize and exercise the inner ear and brain. In children, typically reported improvements are in socialization skills, expressive language, attention, sleeping, and academic performance and a reduction in the need for medication. Correspondingly, adults report decreased tension levels and depression and increased focus and concentration.

Two half hour sessions, twice a day (3 hours in between) for ten days on-site - $1400

Home Therapy Systems - Vision Training

Home Therapy Systems - Vision Training

Learning can be impaired if eye movements are slow or clumsy if the eyes jump, "stutter," or lose their place when reading a book or from a computer screen. Vision training is like fitness training for the eyes - coordinating eye muscles for the difficult visual tasks in today's world.

Good vision is more than just the ability to see clearly. It is the ability to understand and respond to what is seen - from whatever source - for hours on end. Eye exercises can improve how your eye muscles work and relieve your symptoms. HTS is fitness training for your eye muscles. Upon successful completion of therapy, your eyes will function comfortably and efficiently as a team. Just like learning to ride a bike, once you teach your eye muscles how to work their best, they don't forget.

S.O.I. - Structure of Intellect Training

SOI - Structure of Intellect - S.O.I.

S.O.I. stands for Structure of Intellect, a theory of the functions and products of human intelligence pioneered by Dr. Mary Meeker over 40 years ago, which has demonstrated success with intelligence training.

S.O.I. is a system that is used both to assess and develop intellectual abilities and performance. Everyone has intelligence. S.O.I. identifies what kind you have, not just how much. S.O.I. trains intellectual abilities based on your own personal profile of strengths and weaknesses. The workbook and CD are tailored to your specific abilities.

S.O.I. provides the following:

  • identifies any abilities needing development
  • develops the building blocks for learning
  • builds self-worth by teaching through a child's strengths
  • materials that can be used individually at home or in a classroom setting
  • results that can be used as part of school curriculum, as well as in Individual Educational Programs (IEP)

SOI individualized Workbooks $50
SOI individualized CD $25

SOI Concept Curriculum

SOI - Structure of Intellect - S.O.I.

Each curricular program prepares students for learning Math, Reading, Language Arts, History, and Science. This is a program designed for all students, but it is particularly effective for students who have difficulty with abstract reasoning. The traditional curriculum leaves the task of creating a coherent structure of concepts in any field to the student - facts and/or processes are presented, and even learned, but the organizing structure of concepts is left to the student. Concept Curriculum reverses this process by presenting the basic system of concepts before the student begins to learn the facts and processes. As a result the learning is much more effective and efficient as well.

  • ReadingPrep - The underlying concepts of reading - left-to-right processing, foundational syntax, acquisition of basic abstract concepts (vocabulary - are presented to the reader in concrete form. This is not a substitute for reading instruction, but since these concepts are assumed to be in place by most reading instruction, reading readiness tests do not address them, which poses a diagnostic problem
  • LanguagePrep - Learners need help with the foundation concepts of sentence structure, basic variation in sentence construction, the logic of complex sentences, and the construction and comprehension of paragraphs. LanguagePrep is designed to make these concepts understandable to all students.
  • MathPrep - Students typically begin to flounder when the math curriculum turns from memorization of symbolic relations (basic arithmetic facts) to broader application of these and to more abstract math concepts. MathPrep is designed to give students greater access to basic math concepts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, negative numbers, decimal numbers, fractions, primes, exponents, expressions (order of operations) and solving for unknowns) more accessible to students.
  • HistoryPrep - HistoryPrep presents the broad concepts of history and social development in concrete form. This is appropriate as an introduction to history for any student from the fourth grade upward to adult education. Semantic instruction is reduced to a minimum in presenting the formative concepts of history.
  • SciencePrep - SciencePrep presents the basic concepts of Science and scientific investigation in concrete form. Scientific method is traced from observation and description, through classification and taxonomy, to cause-and-effect relationships, and the major variations of scientific explanation, prediction, and experimentation. All of this is presented in concrete form, which makes it most easily accessible to all students.

Cost: $200 each

Nutrition

Nutrition

Studies have shown conclusive links between nutrition and children's cognitive development as well as behavior. Factors such as sugar intake, caffeine, carbonated beverages, water, balanced meals, Omega-3 Fatty Acids, and eating intervals throughout the day can have physical and psychological effects on a child's academic performance.

The Learning Gym offers nutritional guidance that can help overcome deficiencies in learning disabled children.
