The Learning Gym Programs
The Learning Gym utilizes the following specialized programs created specifically for various disabilities. The child's progress is tested and monitored to ensure success.
Contrast the Learning Gym to tutoring. Good tutoring may "teach around" a learning disability, but it usually doesn't change the root of the problem.
Contrast the Learning Gym with special education (or resource). Special education uses instructional methods that are different from the ordinary classroom and often "compensate" for learning disabilities. In special education, learning disabilities call for a "special" type of education that acknowledges and deals with a disability but doesn't always promote change.
S.O.I. - Structure of Intellect
S.O.I. stands for Structure of Intellect, a theory of the functions and products of human intelligence pioneered by Dr. Mary Meeker over 40 years ago, which has demonstrated success with intelligence training.
S.O.I. is a system that is used both to assess and develop intellectual abilities and performance. Everyone has intelligence. S.O.I. identifies what kind you have, not just how much.
S.O.I. provides the following:
- identifies any abilities needing development
- develops the building blocks for learning
- builds self-worth by teaching through a child's strengths
- materials that can be used individually at home or in a classroom setting
- results that can be used as part of school curriculum, as well as in Individual Educational Programs (IEP)
Fast ForWord
The Fast ForWord family of products is a series of computer-delivered reading intervention products that incorporate learning from more than 30 years of brain, reading, and language research in order to help children, adolescents, and adults build the cognitive skills needed to learn to read or become better readers.
As students work on the Fast ForWord Language Basics exercises, they listen through headphones and respond with the mouse. With each click of the mouse, Fast ForWord Language Basics software adapts to individual skill levels and responses, adjusting the learner's content exposure and targeting correct responses approximately 80% of the time, which maintains challenge and motivates success.
Earobics
Based on 20 years of literacy research, Earobics is the leading solution for
providing explicit, comprehensive early literacy skill training. It systematically teaches the critical phonological awareness, listening and introductory phonics skills required for learning to read and spell. With entertaining characters and encouraging feedback that kids love!
Earobics features sophisticated adaptive training technology that automatically
adjusts the level of instruction to your child's skill level and progress. You can set the starting level for each game at Beginning, Intermediate or Advanced. A Progress Chart tracks your child's skill improvements.
While progress varies by child, most show significant skill improvement from
using Earobics only 15 to 20 minutes per day, three times a week.
Berard Auditory Integration Training (AIT)
The Berard AIT method has been successfully used to help individuals with attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), autism, dyslexia, hyperactivity, learning disabilities (LD), language impairments, pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), central auditory processing disorder (CAPD), attention deficit disorder (ADD), and depression.
Berard AIT was designed to normalize hearing and the ways in which the brain processes auditory information. Distortions in hearing can sometimes be a significant contributing factor in the conditions listed above. Individuals with the abovementioned disorders can often have hearing which is disorganized, erratic, asymmetrical, hypersensitive, or otherwise abnormal.
During Berard Auditory Integration Training, music is sent through a specialized electronic device. The electronic device randomizes and filters the frequencies from the music source and sends these modified sounds into the child's ears through a set of headphones. The randomized frequencies mobilize and exercise the inner ear and brain. For example, the sound waves vibrate and exercise the muscles that control the three ossicles (the small bones in the middle ear). It is important to note that if the child's audiogram has indicated a hypersensitivity to certain frequencies, the electronic device will modulate and control the volume of those particularly sensitive frequencies.
Processing and Cognitive Enhancement (PACE)
The Processing and Cognitive Enhancement (PACE) program was developed to train cognitive learning skills. To train cognitive learning skills, PACE applies the most recent scientific research on learning.
Those who can benefit from the program include high or average performers who want to perform mental activities faster and more efficiently, and even better than before, as well as below average performers who have learning difficulties.
PACE focuses on enhancing and improving processing skills that will bring about the biggest impact on learning. The processing skills that will do this are the deficient cognitive skills underlying the learning problem.
The PACE program is a twelve-week, intense, one-on-one, cognitive training program that corrects and enhances learning skills.
LOCAN
LOCAN is a new method for teaching reading that is appropriate for the figural learner who is more mechanically inclined. Figural learners will probably not make progress in reading with conventional methods but if they do learn to read, it will probably be reading without comprehension.
Children learn this figurally-translated language (LOCAN) very quickly. Then they develop the confidence to make the transition to an alphabetic phonic representation of language. And this is how half of the world learns to read - all Chinese and Japanese children first learn to read in a figural language. But the LOCAN student has an advantage. The LOCAN figural language is much more representational than the Chinese or Japanese, so it is easier to
learn.
Most third graders who have not learned to read by conventional methods, learn to read LOCAN in a matter of weeks, and they then make the transition to alphabetic language very quickly.
LOCAN is for all grade levels - even for adults. LOCAN is available in printed form with computer supplements.
Vision Training
Learning can be impaired if eye movements are slow or clumsy if the eyes jump, "stutter," or lose their place when reading a book or from a computer screen.
Vision training is like fitness training for the eyes - coordinating eye muscles for the difficult visual tasks in today's world.
Good vision is more than just the ability to see clearly. It is the ability to understand and respond to what is seen - from whatever source - for hours on end. The vision skills that served our ancestors -- seeing animals and enemies at a distance -- are not enough for youngsters in today's school environment. Check your child for near vision problems with our children's vision screening test.
Tutoring at The Learning Gym in Manhattan Beach
The Learning Gym Academic Enrichment Program offers Tutoring Packages that create confident, well-rounded students who flourish academically.
The program offers tutoring services in the following subjects:
- Math
- Reading
- Science
- History
- English
- Study Skills
All tutoring sessions will be organized into small groups no larger than three students.
Nutrition
Studies have shown conclusive links between nutrition and children's cognitive development as well as behavior. Factors such as sugar intake, caffeine, carbonated beverages, water, balanced meals, Omega-3 Fatty Acids, and eating intervals throughout the day can have physical and psychological effects on a child's academic performance.
90% of American children are deficient in Zinc, yet "Zinc makes you think!"
(Dr. John Taylor)
The Learning Gym offers nutritional guidance that can help overcome difficiencies in learning disabled children.
